The idea has split fans into two camps, but it is not without reason when viewed from the Dallas Mavericks’ current situation. After deciding to rebuild around rookie Cooper Flagg, Dallas have effectively stepped away from the title race and entered a clearing out phase. With Anthony Davis gone, Irving’s high salary and timeline no longer match a rebuild, making him one of the most likely core players to leave.
Houston’s urgent need for an upgrade and Dallas’ rebuilding direction make this potential deal a natural fit. The Rockets’ flaws were visible throughout the playoffs. They lacked an elite ball handler and did not have a reliable isolation scorer for late game situations. Their regular season success came partly from young energy, defensive pressure, and fast break chances, but once playoff intensity increased, those advantages were no longer enough.
Amen Thompson is gifted, but his shooting and playmaking are not yet strong enough to carry the backcourt. Reed Sheppard can serve as a useful shooter, but he does not have the on ball ability needed when a game slows down. Fred VanVleet, meanwhile, has declined because of age and injuries, making him less dependable than before. Irving also has existing chemistry with Durant from their Brooklyn days, which means they would not need to start from scratch. Alongside Sengun, whose passing can connect the offense, the Rockets could build a dangerous scoring system with very few blind spots.
Of course, this trade would be a double edged sword. Irving’s injury concerns, uncertain availability, off court issues, and defensive limitations would all carry risk. If the move failed, Houston could burn valuable future assets and waste what remains of Durant’s peak years. That would leave the franchise stuck in the mud for a long time.
